Forest bathing does not involve diving into rivers or swimming in streams! So what is it? The name forest bathing is a translation of the Japanese Shinrin-yoku. Shinrin means forest and yoku means bathing, showering or basking in. So it is taking in the forest atmosphere and allowing nature to soak into our body through all our senses.
In forest bathing we are really connecting to nature by opening up our senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch and focussing on how we feel. It can be done at any time of the year, because the experiences will be different, depending on the season. However, we do not just forest bathe in forests, we can do it anywhere in nature, which makes it accessible to everyone. We have a innate affinity for the natural world and contact with it is as vital to our well-being as regular exercise and a healthy diet.
I take people on forest bathing walks in groups and individually and no two walks are the same, as nature is constantly changing. We can do a number of different activities to help ourselves to really relax and appreciate nature. It is perfect if you are looking for insights into issues you may currently have, or if you feel stuck. You don’t have to think about anything – everything is taken care of. Just leave behind any expectations, go with what is happening in the present moment and enjoy being nourished by nature!
By coming home to nature, we come home to ourselves. Let nature be your guide
